It should be noted that the Surat Sessions Court on Thursday had sentenced him to two years in the case of the statement regarding ‘Modi surname’.

Rahul Gandhi may now file a legal appeal of the judgement

In the case presented by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi, Rahul Gandhi was recently given a two-year prison sentence for his alleged remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” The judge also released him on bail and postponed the punishment for 30 days to give him time to appeal to a higher court. He may now file a legal appeal of the judgement. The constitutionality of the action has been questioned by Congress leaders, who claim that only the President has the power to remove MPs from office after consulting the Election Commission. If the decision is not overturned by a higher court, He won’t be able to contest in elections for the following eight years.
