DMDK Chief Vijayakanth: On Thursday, 71-year-old actor and DMDK chief Vijayakanth passed away in a private hospital in Chennai. According to his party, he tested positive for Covid-19 and was placed on ventilator support. But according to the hospital’s statement, he had pneumonia.
Ventilatory Support and Pneumonia
A statement by the hospital read, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023.” On Tuesday, Vijaynath was brought to the hospital for a routine physical examination. The party said at the time that Vijayakanth was “healthy” and would go home following the examinations.
Tribute to a Tamil Film Legend
In a message on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences, stating that the loss of his “close friend” Vijayakanth leaves a “void that will be hard to fill”. Modi wrote on X, “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.”
Ma Subramaniam Pays Respects
Ma Subramaniam, the minister of health for Tamil Nadu, has visited DMDK chief captain Vijayakanth at his Chennai home. Images released by the news agency ANI showed DMDK supporters lamenting the leader’s passing. On November 20, the DMDK chief had been admitted to the hospital earlier. He was in the hospital getting treatment for a respiratory ailment.
From Silver Screen to Political Stage
Vijayakanth’s public persona has been shaped by his triumphant work in the film industry, encompassing 154 roles, and his subsequent entry into politics. In addition to founding the DMDK, he held two terms as a member of the Legislative Assembly, representing the districts of Rishivandiyam and Virudhachalam. When he was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016, his political career reached its zenith. Vijayakanth withdrew from active political engagement in recent years due to health concerns.
