Anantnag Encounter: In the Gadole jungles in the Kokernag region of Anantnag, a terrorist encounter claimed the life of Deputy Superintendent of Jammu & Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat. DSP Humayun Bhat had contacted his family just before he passed away in an effort to see his one-month-old child.
DSP Humayun Bhat’s Emotional Video Call
In a video chat to his wife Fatima, Humayun Bhat expressed little optimism for his survival. The senior J&K police officer was shot multiple times by this point. He was heavily bleeding after being struck by bullets fired by the TRF, a terrorist group with support from Pakistan that is an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). There were two weeks left till Humayun Bhat’s wedding anniversary. Bhat called his wife to let her know that he might not make it through the injuries. “I may not survive. If I succumb to my injuries, please take care of our son,” Humayun Bhat told Fatima over the video call.
DSP Humayun Bhat’s Stoic Facade
He had just before the call informed his father, retired IG Ghulam Hassan Bhat, that he was hurt but claimed to be “okay”. DSP Humayun Bhat was one of three officers in the front-line anti-terror operations. A Major and an Army Colonel in charge of a battalion were killed in a shootout with terrorists on Wednesday in Kokernag, in the Anantnag area. The Resistance Front, a banned terrorist organisation, took credit for the assault. “Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish, deputy superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat were critically injured in the gunfight and died later,” Army officials said. Dilbag Singh, the DGP of the J&K Police, has acknowledged that he spoke to Humayun Bhat’s father soon after his son was hurt in a bloody gunfight.
A Glimpse into DSP Humayun Bhat’s Rescue
“I spoke to his father from the site of the encounter informing him that our rescue teams had reached the spot and we are getting him down. I showed him on the video call as to what was all being done,” Singh said. “The mountain rescue team was sent along with a few local villagers. But by then, the slain DSP had died due to profuse bleeding,” the DGP said. DSP Humayun Bhat was buried in his village of Humhama in Budgam on Wednesday night. Residents of J&K showed up in large numbers, and anti-Pakistan calls also began to circulate in the Valley. The father of Humayun Bhat displayed the epitome of composure and restraint as he placed flower tributes on his son’s mortal remains. At his Budgam home, he was laid to rest on Wednesday.
