Dubai: According to a media report, at least four Indians including a couple from Kerala, were among the 16 people killed in a major fire that broke out in a residential building in Dubai and injured nine others. At 12:35 on Saturday, the Dubai Civil Defence Operations Room was alerted to a building fire in the city’s historic Al Ras quarter.

A large fire started on the building’s fourth story and quickly spread to other floors. After reaching the scene of the fire, a crew from the Dubai Civil Defence headquarters started evacuating building occupants. Additionally, teams from the Hamriyah and Port Saeed fire stations were called. According to the reports, the flames were put out by 2:42 PM (local time). Four Indians, including a couple from Kerala, have been identified as casualties, the report stated, citing Naseer Vatanappally, an Indian social worker who was present at the Dubai Police mortuary.

According to the report, Vatanappally claimed to be in communication with the Dubai Police, the Indian Consulate in Dubai, other diplomatic entities, and the deceased’s friends and family. The building violated appropriate safety regulations, according to preliminary investigations, the spokeswoman for Dubai Civil Defence stated. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to compile a full report on the fire’s causes, it was noted.
