Dussehra 2022: Just as Vijayadashami or Dussehra are approaching, we thought it would be interesting to share a unique location where Ravana is worshipped rather than Lord Rama. It is believed that Ravana was born here and eventually rose to power in Sri Lanka, the golden city. As a sign of worship for the Maha Brahmin—Ravana—the people of Bisrakh idolise him and do not observe Dussehra and Diwali.

Ravan is believed to have been born in Bisrakh, a village of roughly 10,000 inhabitants now. By singing Bhajan and Kirtan and lighting earthen lamps, the community observes the unique day. They do not, however, observe Dussehra since they view Ravan as an ancestor and grieve his passing.
Ravana is believed to have spent his childhood here
Local folklore claims that Vishrava and Kaikesi were the parents of Ravana. He was Pulastya’s grandson. It is thought that Vishravas, Ravana’s father, who revered Lord Shiva, is where Bisrakh gets its name. Even his early years were spent there. According to mythology, Vishravas once discovered a linga in a jungle and built the Bisrakh Dhaam, also referred to as an abode of God.

A rakshasa princess named Kaikesi was wed to a Brahmin named Vishravas. Kubera, also known as the god of wealth and the oldest son of Vishravas by his first wife, governed Lanka before Ravana took the throne.
Interestingly, according to local belief, fire sacrifices, or yajnas, are performed during the festival of Navratri in order to honour Ravana by praying to Lord Shiva.
