Why is Dussehra celebrated?
There are two legends associated with the celebration of Dussehra
1. Lord Rama defeats Ravana
The ten-headed Ravana, king of Lanka, is thought to have been defeated on this day by Lord Ram, the eighth manifestation of Lord Vishnu. Ravana had kidnapped Lord Ram’s wife Sita and taken her to his kingdom where he held her captive. The scriptures claim that before Lord Rama travelled to Lanka to retrieve Sita, along with his brother Laxman and an army that included his follower Hanuman, he worshipped Goddess Durga and received her blessings. Then, on the tenth day, following nine days of intense combat, Lord Rama succeeded in killing Ravana. The day has been commemorated as Dussehra ever since.
2. Goddess Durga defeats Mahishashura
On this day, Goddess Durga is said to have killed the monster Mahishasura and safeguarded the world. Mahishasura was blessed by lord Brahma that no god or mortal could kill him.

By abusing his power, he began to sow panic both in heaven and on earth. All the gods came to Lord Vishnu for assistance after he overcame Indra. The demon had the blessing that no man or god could kill him, so Lord Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma pooled their forces to create Durga—the embodiment of Goddess Parvati—to slay Mahishashura.
