Election results: As predicted by poll pundits, the Bharatiya Janat Party was surging ahead in Gujarat while initial trends in Himachal Pradesh showed the Congress edging past the saffron party.
In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat, the BJP is eyeing a record seventh straight term and also hoping to buck the nearly four decades of anti-incumbency trend in Himachal Pradesh.
As early trends started coming in from Gujarat, BJP was leading in 98, Congress in 19 , AAP in 4.
Gujarat has 182 seats, the majority mark stands at 92.
No doubt BJP will win: Hardik
BJP candidate from Viramgam, Hardik Patel was asked how many seats will his party get. He quipped: “135-145, we are definitely going to form the Govt. Do you have any doubts?”
In Himachal Pradesh BJP was leading in 10, Congress leads in 5 while AAP was nowhere in the race.
Himachal Pradesh has 68 seats and 35 seats are needed for a victory. In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP had won 44 seats and the Congress 21, with one seat going to CPI-M, and two to independent candidates. The party which wins 35 seats will stake claim to form the government.
Can AAP make a dent?
The election result will determine if the Aam Aadmi Party which launched an aggressive campaign to make it a three-cornered contest for the first time in Gujarat, will be able to establish itself as a challenger to the BJP at the national level.
Besides, the results of the by-elections in six assembly constituencies in five states and the high-profile Lok Sabha seat of Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav in Mainpuri will be also counted.
