ED Chief’s Tenure Extended For Third Time

The government had brought out an ordinance last year, allowing that the tenure of directors of the ED and CBI could be extended by three years after the mandatory two-year period.

Mishra was later given an extension of one year, which was for the second time. Thursday’s order said, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in the tenure of Sanjay Kumar Mishra as Director, ED, for a period of one year (from November 18, 2022 to November 18, 2023).

Who is Sanjay Mishra

Mishra, 60, is a 1984 batch Indian Revenue Service officer in the Income Tax cadre and was appointed as the director of the ED on November 19, 2018. As the ED director has a fixed tenure of two years, his term was ending next week.

ED works under the Union Ministry of Finance. The agency enforces the criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) brought in by the Modi government at the Center in 2018.
