On July 12, 2024, India declared June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day) to mark the Emergency imposed in 1975. Home Minister Amit Shah announced this decision on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He stated, “On 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed without any reason and the voice of the media was suppressed.”
Remembering the Emergency
The Emergency, which lasted from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, was a dark period in Indian history. The government led by Indira Gandhi imposed strict censorship, arrested political opponents, and curtailed civil liberties. Many were jailed without trial, and the media faced severe restrictions.
Tribute to the Sufferers
Amit Shah emphasized that ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who endured the hardships of the Emergency. He mentioned, “The Government of India has decided to celebrate 25 June every year as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’. This day will remind us of the immense contribution of all those people who suffered the inhuman pain of the Emergency of 1975.”
Preserving Democracy for the Future
Amit Shah further added, “This decision taken by the Central Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi aims to honour the struggle of millions of people who fought to revive democracy despite facing innumerable tortures and oppression of the dictatorial government. ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will work to keep alive the eternal flame of protecting democracy and individual freedom inside every Indian, so that no dictatorial mentality like that of the Congress can repeat it in the future.”
PM Modi’s Reflections on Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi tweeted, “To observe 25th June as #SamvidhaanHatyaDiwas will serve as a reminder of what happens when the Constitution of India was trampled over. It is also a day to pay homage to each and every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency, a Congress unleashed dark phase of Indian history.”
