The grand wedding festivities of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant had social media buzzing for months. Pictures and videos of the extravagant celebrations flooded our timelines, leaving many in awe. However, amidst the celebratory posts, a tweet by an X user named Samadrita Dutta Gupta sparked outrage online.
Derogatory Tweet Goes Viral
Samadrita’s tweet, which has since been widely condemned by social media user states, “If I were Radhika, I would live with Anant for one year, make a child with him, divorce him under the pretext of domestic violence, claim alimony and child maintenance, send my child to a boarding school, marry my boyfriend, and live happily. Dreammm. Is hippopotamus ke sath kaun rahega?”
In response, a user wrote, “We all can feel really angry at Samadrita for putting out this sick opinion, but the fact is there are many women actually doing this in reality. Men who are victims of such schemes can be seen crying in family courts to get a glimpse of their kids while paying maintenance.”
The Impact of Derogatory Remarks on Social Media
This incident raises serious questions about the challenges faced by Indian men and men worldwide. There have been numerous cases where men are victims of fake dowry accusations and struggle to feel safe and secure within the legal system. For instance, rumors about Hardik Pandya splitting with his wife and reports suggesting that Natasa might claim 75% of Hardik’s wealth had surfaced. Another example is Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan, who faced similar issues for years until a Delhi Court granted him a divorce in October 2023 on grounds of “cruelty” inflicted by his estranged wife, Aesha Dhawan.
Promoting Wrong Values
The mentality displayed by Samadrita in her post towards Radhika Merchant promotes wrong values and fosters a negative mindset. Such remarks not only degrade individuals but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and injustices. There are numerous fake dowry cases where entire families suffer, and women with such mentalities only exacerbate the issue.
The Need for Awareness and Change
This incident underscores the importance of awareness and a need for change in societal attitudes. It’s crucial to recognise the real victims and ensure that the legal system protects all individuals fairly. Promoting respect and understanding, both online and offline, is essential to building a just and equitable society.
