Kolkata Rape Case

Kolkata Rape Case: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has strongly condemned the rape and killing of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. She has expressed her profound dismay and said that this was horrific. Speaking to news agency PTI, President Murmu declared, “Enough is enough,” as she pointed out the urgent need for an overhaul in society to prevent such heinous crimes against women.

President Murmu’s First Public Comment on Kolkata Case

This is the first public comment from President Murmu regarding the Kolkata case, which has led to protests across the country. As protests have swept the country, her support for the protesters was in full strengths as she called for speedy and decisive justice. President Murmu said it was of utmost importance that not only was women’s dignity and safety ensured in all spheres of life but attitudes toward them also changed.

The President mentioned the incongruity of how students, doctors, citizens were agitating day after day in Kolkata for this issue, while criminals were being allowed to run free elsewhere. She said that no civilized society can tolerate such atrocities against its daughters and sisters.

President Murmu Criticizes Collective Forgetfulness

As the Nirbhaya case completes 12 years, President Murmu lashed out at the collective forgetfulness of society over a series of rape cases. She termed this “collective amnesia” obnoxious and pressed for long-lasting reforms in how crimes against women are remembered and tackled.

Besides, President Murmu also condemned the common “deplorable mindset” that looked at women as lesser beings-less powerful, less capable, and less intelligent. She called for “an honest, unbiased self-introspection” to embark on and pressed society to squarely face some questions staring in the face regarding its treatment of women. Her remarks reflect a broader call for systemic change in an effort to address and root out gender-based violence.
