Mahua Moitra: Leader of the Parliament’s Ethics Committee Vinod Sonkar exclusively told India Today on Friday that he has not yet received the letter criticising Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra over the cash-for-query controversy written by businessman Darshan Hiranandani.
Ethics Committee Head Addresses Investigation While Moitra Expresses Willingness to Cooperate
Sonkar stated that the evidence will be reviewed by the committee because it is clearly a “serious matter”. “The committee is going to look into this. We have requested that parties provide the committee with evidence,” he said to India Today. In response to the committee’s stance, Moitra stated that she would be happy to be called upon and would be happy to “answer questions to [the] CBI and Ethics Committee (which has [an] absolute majority of BJP members) if and when” they do. “I don’t have the time or want to respond to BJP trolls or feed an Adani-directed media circus trial. I’m having fun at Nadia’s Durga Puja. Shubho Sashthi,” she posted on Friday on X, formerly Twitter.
Businessman’s Accusation and Moitra’s Response Regarding Letter to Ethics Panel
Hiranandani claimed that Moitra had given him her Parliamentary login credentials so that he could “post questions on her behalf” in a letter he turned in to the Ethics Panel on Thursday. But Moitra retaliated against Hiranandani by casting doubt on the veracity of the businessman’s letter. The TMC MP added that the businessman’s letter is on “white paper and not on an official letterhead nor notarized” and that its contents are a “joke” in a two-page statement that was posted on X (previously Twitter).
Moitra Claims Letter Was Forged by PMO
She made a stunning allegation that Hiranandani was “forced” to sign the letter and that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had written it with the intention of harming her. She claimed in her letter that “the BJP government has been waiting desperately to somehow shut me up on the Adani issue.”
BJP Lawmaker Accuses Mahua Moitra of Taking Bribes
This occurred amid the current cash-for-query controversy that erupted when BJP lawmaker Nishikant Dubey asserted that Moitra accepted “bribes” in exchange for asking questions in parliament. Dubey claimed to have “irrefutable” evidence that bribes were exchanged between Moitra and Hiranandani in a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Dubey referenced Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, who is thought to be Moitra’s estranged partner.
Mahua Moitra Denies Allegations
Dehadrai had claimed that Moitra had accepted money from Hiranandani in order for her to explicitly issue inquiries during House proceedings regarding Adani Group, a rival of the real estate behemoth Hiranandani Group. Previously, though, Hiranandai Group refuted these claims, claiming that it has always collaborated with the government in the “interest of people” and that it was not involved in “business of politics”. Moitra has denied all of the allegations and placed the blame for the incident on her “jilted ex” and a “fake degree MP”.
