Ex-Army Chief VK Singh Predicts POK’s Eventual Merger with India Amid Growing Gilgit-Baltistan Protests

VK Singh

VK Singh: After some years, Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) would independently reunite with India. When questioned about the POK residents’ requests that their territory be amalgamated with India and the BJP‘s position on the matter, he made the remarks.

VK Singh’s Assertion and the Disputed Territories Debate

“POK apne aap Bharat ke andar aayega. Thoda thand rakh. (POK will merge with India on its own. Wait for some time)”, he told reporters in Rajasthan‘s Dausa. Arunachal Pradesh, the Aksai Chin in Kashmir, several disputed territories in the South China Sea, and China’s most recent “standard map” were all included in his remarks. China’s chart was strongly criticised by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who called it “their old habit”. “China has put out maps with territories (that are) not theirs. (It is an) old habit. Just by putting out maps with parts of India… this doesn’t change in anything. Our government is very clear about what our territory is. Making absurd claims does not make other people’s territories yours,” Jaishankar told NDTV.

India’s Firm Stance on POK and Criticism of Pakistan and China

POK has always been, is, and will be a vital part of India, according to the government. It has condemned Pakistan and its ally China for making combined references that included Kashmir. Jaishankar criticised Pakistan for supporting and funding terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir during the SCO Summit in Goa in May and enquired as to when Pakistan would “vacate the illegally occupied territories” there. It’s interesting to note that he spoke when Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, then Pakistan’s foreign minister, was present. Jaishankar claimed that POK is a part of India and that one day the nation will have physical control over it last year. Our stance on POK has been and will continue to be extremely clear. India is a part of POK, he declared.

Shia Residents of Skardu Demand Open Kargil Highway and Relocation to India

Residents of Skardu, a Shia-majority city 90 km from India, are adamant that the Kargil Highway between the two countries be made open. They claims that they wants to relocate to India from Gilgit-Baltistan, which is governed by Pakistan. The population of Gilgit-Baltistan is about 20 lakh. The Shia group consists of around 8 lakh people out of them. The rebellious actions of these Shias have alarmed the Pakistani Army. In response to the unruly behaviour, the Pakistani Army has dispatched 20.000 extra soldiers.
