Anand Mohan Singh, a former member of the Bihar the MP, left jail in the early hours of morning amidst a significant controversy over the Bihar government’s revision of the prison regulations that paved the way for his release.
Singh, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for complicity in the 1994 murder of an IAS officer, is currently unidentified. Chetan Anand, a member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), cannot be reached via phone, and the family’s Saharsa home is locked.
Initially, at 7 am, the gangster-turned-politician was scheduled for release. However, it was purportedly done to escape the media when the plan was suddenly changed.
Singh attended his son’s wedding while on a 15-day parole. He addressed the reporters in the interval. He only went back to jail yesterday.
The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar modified the prison regulations before releasing the former MP.
Previously, a person convicted of killing a public employee while they were on duty was not eligible for a sentence reduction. The Bihar government altered this, making it possible for 27 prisoners—including Singh, who has served at least 14 years in prison—to be released.
The action has caused a significant uproar, with the BJP of the opposition criticising the Nitish Kumar government. Sushil Kumar Modi, a member of the BJP and a former deputy chief minister of Bihar, claimed that Mr Kumar had broken the law to maintain his position of authority with the help of the RJD.
Singh is regarded as a well-known Rajput figure because he represented the RJD in Lok Sabha. And his release is thought to be an effort to win over Bihar’s higher caste voters for the general election in 2024. The announcement coincides with Mr. Kumar’s meeting with opposition leaders to forge a united front to oppose the BJP in 2024.
