Farmer Protest: While the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march continues, and thousands of farmers have vowed to continue their protest, the Centre and farmer leaders are preparing for a third round of talks. Today evening, Union Ministers Arjun Munda, Piyush Goyal, and Nityanand Rai are scheduled to have a video conference with the protesting farmer union representatives. Following the failure of previous discussions between the two parties to produce outcomes, farmers began their protest march on Tuesday, February 13.
Ministerial Dialogue on Farmer Protests
According to sources cited by news agency PTI, senior Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Arjun Munda held talks on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing farmer protests and associated issues. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, a former minister of agriculture, and Munda, who presently controls the Agriculture Ministry and has previously engaged in meetings with farmer groups, discussed a range of farmer concerns during the meeting, the specifics of which have not yet been made public.
February 16 Strike Announcement
A statewide strike is scheduled for February 16, according to Harmeet Singh Kadian of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Kadian) and the Punjab Chapter of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM). In addition, there will be protests on February 15 from 11 AM to 2 PM at toll plazas throughout Punjab.
Clashes at Shambhu Border
Tear gas was used by security personnel at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana to scatter farmers who were trying to break through barriers. In response, a few demonstrators threw stones. A police drone was observing the protests, so a few farmers tried to bring it down with kites.
Farmers are unable to cross the border between Data Singhwala and Khanauri on their tractor-trolleys because Haryana Police have erected obstacles along the route. On the first day of the “Delhi Chalo” march, there were reported fights and injuries, but the demonstrations went on.
Commuters Advised to Seek Alternate Routes Amidst Security Checks
The Delhi Police encouraged commuters to look for alternate routes and issued a warning about excessive traffic on the DND Flyway as a result of security checks. To halt the farmers’ approach, barricades, concrete blocks, iron nails, and container walls have been erected at strategic locations throughout Delhi, including Ghazipur, Singhu, and Tikri.
Farmers who are protesting call for the following: a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP), the execution of the recommendations made by the Swaminathan Commission, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, the discharge of farm debt, and justice for the victims of the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
