Thousands of farmers marching from Nashik to Mumbai have decided to call off their agitation and padayatra, a day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said in the state assembly that he has discussed their demands with a delegation of farmers .
CPI leader and former MLA Jeeva Pandu Gavit, who is leading the 200 km long march, today announced the decision to call off the march.
After taking steps from the government, it was decided to withdraw the movement.
Jeeva Pandu Gavit said that the State Government has taken immediate steps to fulfill its promises, District Collectors have visited Nashik and many other places. Gavit said, “We were afraid that the government would only give assurances and not act on the demands. However, now that they have initiated appropriate action, we have decided to withdraw our agitation. All the farmers are returning home.
Farmers will be given relief amount at the rate of Rs 350 per quintal
Maharashtra CM Shinde said he has discussed 14 points with the delegation of farmers, including forest rights, encroachment of forest land, transfer of land from temple trusts and grazing grounds to farmers for cultivation. Appealing to the farmers to withdraw their long march, Mr. Shinde had said that the decisions taken would be implemented immediately.
He said that Rs 350 per quintal would be paid as financial relief to onion growers who were affected due to low onion prices and crop damage due to unseasonal rains.
CM Shinde said – situation worsened due to over production of onions
The farmers were demanding Rs 600 per quintal relief for onions, 12-hour uninterrupted power supply and farm loan waiver. Farmers have been badly affected by the sharp fall in onion prices in Maharashtra. Chief Minister Shinde has said that this situation has arisen due to excess production. The farmers were also demanding steps to arrest the fall in prices of soyabean, cotton and arhar, and immediate relief to farmers affected by the recent unseasonal rains and other natural calamities.
The participants in the procession were also demanding implementation of the old pension scheme for the state government employees who joined service after 2005.
