Mumbai: In the early hours of Friday, a tragic fire erupted in a seven-story residential building in Mumbai’s Goregaon West, resulting in the loss of seven lives, which included two minors, and causing injuries to 51 people. The fire broke out at 3:05 am in the Jay Bhavani building, a structure affiliated with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and situated in close proximity to Azad Maidan in Goregaon West. The victims comprised three women, a man, and two young girls, with the identity of one individual yet to be determined. CM Eknath Shinde has announced treatment on govt expense for the injured, and, 5 lakh rupees aid to the family whose members passed away.
Fire reportedly started from parking
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials reported that it took over three hours to successfully extinguish the flames, which were finally brought under control by 6:45 am. Additional Fire Divisional Officer (ADFO) of Goregaon, Somnath Bhaye, explained that the fire initially originated in a vehicle parked within the building’s stilt parking area, and rapidly spread throughout the entire Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building via the elevator.
Bhaye stated, “Several vehicles, including three four-wheelers, 40 motorcycles and bicycles had been parked in the stilt area of the building where the fire first broke out. A lot of scrap clothes had also been dumped on the ground floor because of which the fire spread.” He further said, “The fire spread from here to the ground floor and then up to the seventh floor through the lift area.”
The latest report from the civic authorities revealed that on the ground floor, the fire was primarily contained within the shops, piles of scrap materials, rags, and parked vehicles in the area. In contrast, on the upper floors of the building, the flames took the staircase, doors, windows, and various residential structures.
Fire broke out in middle of the night
Goregaon’s ADFO Bhaye also noted that since the fire broke out during the late hours of the night, it caught the building’s residents by surprise as they were asleep at that time. In the rescue efforts, 15 of the injured individuals were transported to Cooper Hospital, while 36 were taken to Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray (HBT) Medical College Hospital, Mumbai. Among the 15 admitted to Cooper Hospital, one tragically lost their life, one remains in critical condition, nine are in stable condition, and four chose to leave against medical advice.
