The nation’s top anti-terror agency arrested a suspect in a transnational case involving terrorist leaders in Bangladesh and Myanmar in the hill area of Churachandpur, Manipur. The suspect is being transported to Delhi for interrogation and additional research.
The anti-terror agency claimed in a statement that the accused and his network in Myanmar and Bangladesh wanted to take advantage of the Manipur issue.
According to an NIA post on X, Seiminlun Gangte, the alleged terrorist, is instrumental in a “conspiracy with Myanmar- and Bangladesh-based leadership of terror outfits to wage war against India by exploiting the ethnic unrest in Manipur.”
According to police officials, Gangte is also the primary suspect in the June 22 car bombing in Kwakta, Manipur, which claimed one life. On June 22, an explosion from a Scorpio SUV that was parked close to a narrow bridge was viewed as a serious escalation of the conflict. According to sources at the time, the attack displayed the classic traits of well-trained terrorist hands.
The NIA has not revealed to which terrorist organisation Gangte belongs.
With the centre, the state, and the military, about 25 Kuki rebel groups—the most of which reside in Churachandpur—have signed a trilateral suspension of operations (SoO) agreement. As part of this arrangement, the insurgents must stay in certain camps and store their weapons in locations that are under close supervision.
However, there are claims that some rebels from organisations that have ratified the SoO pact have taken part in the unrest in Manipur.
This case was brought by the NIA on its own in July.
“Investigation… revealed that Myanmar and Bangladesh-based militant groups have entered into a conspiracy with a section of militant leaders in India to indulge in incidents of violence with an intention to drive a wedge between different ethnic groups and to wage war against the government of India,” the NIA said in the statement today.
“And for this purpose, the leadership have been providing funds to buy arms, ammunition and other types of terrorist hardware which are being sourced both, from across the border, as well as from other terrorist outfits active in northeastern states to stoke the current ethnic strife in Manipur,” the NIA said.
In the last nine days, Manipur has arrested two terror suspects, Gangte being the second. In connection with a case involving terrorism, the NIA detained Moirangthem Anand Singh on September 22.
