S Jaishankar: During a meeting on Thursday between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Chinese counterpart Qin Gang at the G20 summit, the focus was on tackling the current challenges faced by the two nations in their bilateral relationship. The main topic of discussion was maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas. Jaishankar highlighted that the current state of the relationship was far from normal in light of these challenges.
First meeting between the FMs
That was the duo’s first meeting, which lasted for around 45 minutes after Qin was appointed China’s foreign minister in December 2022 amid a 34-month border dispute in eastern Ladakh. Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar wrote “Met Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang on the sidelines of #G20FMM this afternoon. Our discussions were focused on addressing current challenges to the bilateral relationship, especially peace and tranquillity in the border areas.”
After the meeting, S Jaishankar told in a press conference, “We spent maybe about 45 minutes talking to each other and the bulk of our conversation understandably was about the current state of our relationship, which many of you heard me describe as “abnormal” and I think those were among the adjectives I used in that meeting.”
Other issues important as well: S Jaishankar
He also pushed talking on other issues, “that need to be discussed, very openly and candidly between us”. There have been several standoffs at the border, and both the nations have engaged in several rounds of military and diplomatic meetings to have a peaceful get-along at the LAC in Ladakh. While, there has been some brief halts in these standoffs, Chinese forces continue to remain in violation of the signed border agreements.
