Ferry Service: According to sources, the recently started passenger ferry service will take 3–4 hours to travel from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka. The baggage allowance would be increased to 50 kg from 15 kg, as opposed to the air route between Chennai and Jaffna. Instead of making a long flight to Colombo followed by a tiresome 8–10 hour road trip to the northern portion of Sri Lanka, travellers with heavy luggage (50 kg) could easily travel to the northern and eastern areas of Sri Lanka in 3–4 hours.
Seamless Pilgrimage Journeys and Seasonal Considerations
Pilgrims could easily travel to churches (Velankanni), mosques (Nagore), and temples (Saneeswaram temple at Thirunallar, Rameshwaram, Madurari, and Tanjore). The North-East Monsoon won’t arrive in Tamil Nadu and the Sri Lankan coast until October 2023, according to other sources. It stated, “Post that ferry operations would be challenging.” In January 2024, the ferry services will once more start up after the monsoon season or during the nice weather period.
Connecting India and Sri Lanka
In order to connect Nagapattinam with Kankesanthurai, a ferry service would be run by Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). Nagapattinam is located 60 nautical miles (110 km) north of Kankesanthurai, and depending on the state of the sea, it can take 3 to 4 hours to travel there. Prior to this, MEA had approved Rs 8 crore for the improvement of Nagpattinam port at the request of the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board (TMB). Dredging of the canal as well as renovations to the approach road and passenger terminal building are part of the project.
