Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: A highly significant festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, The Ganesh Chaturthi is approaching. Celebrated as the birth of the elephant God, Ganesh Utsav extends for ten days and is observed with great enthusiasm by devotees across the nation. However, there are certain rules that every devotee must follow while welcoming Ganpati Bappa at home.
The festival is notably celebrated on a grand scale in the states of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka, as well as in the cities of Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad. Ganesh Utsav lasts for ten days, during which Lord Ganesha is worshipped. At the conclusion of the festival, people bring Lord Ganesha’s idol to their homes and immerse it in a water body with great celebration. Lord Ganesha, also known as ‘Vighnaharta,’ is worshipped and is believed to remove the obstacles from life.
The 10-day Ganesh Utsav commences on September 18 and concludes on September 28. If you are also looking to welcome Ganpati Bappa into your home, here are some important dos and don’ts to keep in mind.
DOs
- Whether you buy or make your Ganesha idol, include a majestic ‘mukut’ or crown for good luck and fortune.
- Ensure that the Ganesha idol is in a sitting position.
- You can keep the Ganesha idol in your home for 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 10, or 11 days before performing the visarjan or immersion ceremony.
- The idol should also feature Ganesha’s companion mouse and some ‘modaks’ to bring positive energy into your home.
- Cover the Ganesha idol with a red ‘chunari’ or cloth while welcoming Bappa home.
- Welcome Ganpati Bappa with the sounds of shankh, bells, and a festive atmosphere.
- During the ‘sthapana’ or installation of the idol, choose auspicious directions like east, west, or north-east.
Don’ts:
- Ensure that Lord Ganesha’s trunk faces left, symbolizing success and positivity, rather than right, which signifies stubbornness or challenging times.
- Always have someone present with Lord Ganesha’s idol; never leave it unattended.
- Prior to immersing Lord Ganesha’s idol in water, perform the aarti and puja rituals.
- After the Ganesh stapana, refrain from consuming tamasic foods like onion and garlic. Prepare and offer only satvic foods to Lord Ganesha.
