Govardhan Puja 2024: Goverdhan Puja, observed the day after Diwali, celebrates Lord Krishna’s protection of the villagers of Gokul. Devotees worship Mount Govardhan by preparing special bhog, offering gratitude, and reenacting Krishna’s act of lifting the mountain to shield people from heavy rains. This year, the festival falls on November 1, 2024, with auspicious timing from 6:34 a.m. to 8:56 a.m. for beginning the rituals.
Foods for Bhog and Rituals
The bhog offerings typically include a wide variety of foods, especially those symbolic of abundance and gratitude, such as milk-based sweets, fruits, and fresh grains. Devotees prepare these offerings to represent the mountain of food that Krishna provided, a central aspect of the ritual. Traditionally, “Annakut”—a large spread of dishes including kheer, sweets, and vegetables—is prepared and placed before a replica of Mount Govardhan as a gesture of devotion.
Things to Avoid During Goverdhan Puja
On this day, it is advised to avoid non-vegetarian foods, alcohol, and acts that could be seen as disruptive or disrespectful during the puja, as the focus is on reverence and gratitude toward nature and divine protection.
The day is filled with singing bhajans and storytelling to honor Krishna’s deed and his connection to the people of Gokul, strengthening the community’s faith and celebrating nature’s abundance.
