Tomorrow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is now in Gujarat, will visit to the city of Morbi where a British-era bridge collapsed Friday night, killing at least 141 people.
The suspension bridge had about 500 people on it when its supporting cables broke, sending people plummeting into the river below, including women and children. On the 150-year-old bridge in Morbi, many people were performing Chhath puja rituals.
The Prime Minister stated earlier today that the centre is offering the state all assistance.
“I am in Ekta Nagar, but my mind is with the victims of Morbi. Rarely, in my life, would I have experienced such pain. On one hand, there is a pain-riddled heart and on the other hand, there is the path to duty,” he said while addressing the people at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Kevadia where he paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary.
Morbi’s bridge over the Machchhu River had been closed for repairs for seven months. On October 26, the Gujarati New Year, it was reopened to the public without a fitness certification from the local authorities.
