Gudi Padwa, also known as Samvatsar Padvo is commemorated on the first day of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar. It is also considered to be the first day of the new year for the population of Maharashtra and the Konkan region. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm as it holds a lot of significance.
Significance of Gudi Padwa:
The term Gudi Padwa is is named after two words with ”Gudi” meaning the emblem or flag of Lord Brahma and ”Padwa’ signifying the first day of the moon. Rabi crops are reaped after this festivity as it also implies the arrival of the spring season.
History of Gudi Padwa:
According to Hindu mythology, it is said that Lord Brahma created the Universe on this day. It is also said that Lord Brahma further established the theory of days, weeks, months, and years on the day of Gudi Padwa.
The same festival is known as ‘Ugadi’ in South India and is reckoned to be the first day of the creation of the universe. This is why Lord Brahma is praised on this day. Gudi Padwa also signifies Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana.
The festival celebrates the festivities done for Lord Rama after his return to Ayodhya after finishing fourteen years of exile.
How it is celebrated:
People celebrate the occasion with the customary oil bath which is practised as the day begins, following which they decorate their abodes and slip into new clothes. Rangoli comes as one of the primary attractions of the festive occasion and is made utilizing colours and flowers.
People also position Gudi which is considered as a symbol of victory at the entrance of their homes or on windows, following which they consume leaves of neem.
