Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious festivals of Hindu culture which marks the first day of the sun’s transition to Capricorn. This day is dedicated to the Sun god and is also known as Makara Sankranti or Maghi.
It also commemorates the end of winter and the beginning of longer days. From this day, the sun begins its northward movement. Every year Sankranti is celebrated on 14 or 15 January depending upon the solar cycle.
Sankranti is celebrated with great joy and happiness in different states across the country with different names. In Uttar Pradesh it is famous as Khichdi, in Gujarat famous as Uttarayan, in Tamil Nadu, it is known as Pongal for the people of Bihar and Jharkhand it is Sukarat, for Bengali it is PoushPabon.
Makar Sankranti holds great importance in Indian mythology. It is said that a powerful God named Sankranti defeated a demon Sankarasur. To celebrate the win, this festival is celebrated.
In the morning people take a holy dip in River at holy places, chant mantras, and donate black sesame seeds, sesame laddus, rice, vegetables, pulses, turmeric, fruits, and other items to the poor.
Sankranti is a time to consume freshly harvested food grains, which are first offered to the Gods and then eaten. Children and even elders enjoy this day by flying colorful kites and eating food made up of Til and Jaggery (Gud).
