“We had a long conversation on July 18 and on July 19 we got to know he is no more,” recalled Smriti Singh, the widow of late Captain Anshuman Singh, who was awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously for displaying indomitable courage and making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
A Hero Remembered – Kirti Chakra Conferred
President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, honored Captain Anshuman Singh with the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award. Smriti Singh received this prestigious award on his behalf on Friday, a testament to his bravery.
A Love Story Beyond Distance
Smriti reminisced about their beautiful journey, “We met on the first day of college. I wouldn’t be dramatic, but it was love at first sight. After a month, he got selected into the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). We met in an engineering college, and he got into a medical college—he was a super intelligent guy. After just one month of meeting, it was a long-distance relationship for eight long years, and then we thought we should get married, so we did.” Their love story culminated in their marriage in February 2023, soon after Anshuman’s graduation from AFMC.
The Last Heartfelt Conversation
She tearfully recounted their last conversation, “On July 18, we had a long talk about our future—building a house, having kids, and more. On the morning of the 19th, I got a call that he was no more.” The shock and grief were overwhelming for Smriti and her family. “For the first 7-8 hours, we couldn’t accept that anything like this had happened. Till date, I am not coping up. Just trying to figure out thinking maybe it is not true. But now that I have the Kirti Chakra in my hand, I realize it is true. But it’s okay, he is a hero. We can manage a little of our lives because he has managed a lot. He gave up his life and family so that the other three army families could be saved.”
An Act of Unmatched Bravery
Captain Singh’s bravery shone during a major fire incident in Siachen in July 2023. A short circuit caused a fire in an Indian Army ammunition dump early in the morning. Amid the chaos, Captain Singh rescued fellow soldiers trapped in a fiber-glass hut. He then attempted to retrieve life-saving medicines from a medical investigation shelter as the fire spread. Sadly, he sustained severe burns and succumbed to his injuries.
