The Rajya Sabha passed the Women’s Reservation Bill by a majority vote on Thursday, a day after the Lok Sabha unanimously cleared it after a day-long discussion, with 454 members voting in favour and 2 against it. The resolution was approved by the House with 215 votes in favour, none opposed, and no abstentions. Earlier, all Rajya Sabha MPs, regardless of party affiliation, verbally endorsed the bill, despite some Opposition members calling it an electoral ploy.

PM Modi stated ahead of the Rajya Sabha vote, “This bill will instil new confidence in the people of the country. All members and political parties have played a crucial role in empowering women and developing ‘Nari Shakti’. Let us send a strong message to the country.” PM Modi described the adoption of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as a “golden moment in India’s Parliamentary journey,” and he acknowledged the success to all members of all parties and their leaders.
About Women’s Reservation Bill
The Women’s Reservation Bill, which allows for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures, was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, was approved following a response from Law Minister Meghwal. The bill was passed after a division, with 454 members voting in favour of the legislation and two voting against it.
The modifications proposed by opposition members were negative, and there was also voting on bill provisions. The ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ is also the first law enacted by the Lok Sabha during the special session.
