Hockey Icon Sandeep Singh booked for sexual misconduct with woman coach, a look back at his sports and politics career

Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh is in the headlines. Sandeep resigned from his post of Haryana Sports Minister on ‘moral grounds’ after a woman coach had accused him of sexual harassment.

Speaking to the press, the woman said: “I am also a player, think how much patience I would have to tolerate such ill behaviour of this person from February till now,” adding that she hadn’t spoken of the harassment earlier, as she was afraid of the negative impact on the sports industry. “I tried as much as I could. He created, such an atmosphere officially that a girl comes to him automatically,” she added.

Sandeep who is also a first-time MLA from Pehowa in Kurukshetra had expressed hope for a detailed investigation in the matter. He also denied his role in the case.

Who is Sandeep Singh?

Sandeep is popularly known as ‘Flicker Singh’ due to his drag flick expertise on the hockey turf. Born in 1986, in the town of Shahabad, Kurukshetra, Sandeep became the youngest Indian player to play for the senior side in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

In the same year, he became the youngest Indian hockey player to represent the country in the Olympics. Later in 2005, he became the highest goal scorer (10) in Junior World Cup and earned the nickname of ‘Flicker Singh’.

Life-changing accident

In 2006, Sandeep was travelling to New Delhi from Chandigarh in train by Kalka Shatabdi Express to join his national teammates. He was indulged in a freak accident, an officer from Railway Police Force (RPF) seated behind him, accidentally pilled the trigger of his rifle.

Sandeep was injured badly and was paralysed from the waist down post-accident and many believed that he may never play hockey again. But Sandeep proved everyone wrong and after intense physical rehabilitation and a ‘never die attitude’, made a comeback in the Indian national side.

He later also captained the Indian men’s hockey team in major tournaments.

Political journey

After retiring from hockey in 2016, Sandeep entered politics and won the election in 2019 on a BJP ticket. He defeated Mandeep Singh Chatha, the son of a veteran Congress leader. He was later added to the Cabinet as the sports minister and Minister of Printing and Stationery (MoS) (Independent Charge).

Before entering into politics, a movie- Soorma, was also made about his life. He also appeared as a judge in the popular show ‘MTV Roadies’
