UNSC: Bjarni Benedictsson, Iceland’s foreign minister, landed in the country’s capital on Sunday. The foreign minister of Iceland was cordially welcomed by Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Iceland’s Unwavering Support
Regarding support for India’s permanent seat on the UNSC, Bjarni Benediktsson, the Foreign Minister of Iceland, states, “We will continue to be very supportive. India should have a seat (at the UNSC) as it is the largest democracy in the world.”
Revitalizing Bilateral Ties
The Ministry of External Affairs claims that since 2000, a number of high-level visits have given bilateral relations new life. The first nation in the Nordic region to openly back India’s application for permanent membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC) was Iceland.
Iceland has since made multiple statements restating its position. Official relations between Iceland and India have been strengthened, in particular, by high-level bilateral visits by Icelandic and Indian leaders, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
