The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat wave warning for Delhi and adjoining areas after several parts of the capital witnessed a record maximum temperature above 45 degrees Celsius. “Four stations in Delhi reported a maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius or slightly higher today,” the India Meteorological Department said, as it added that it was the first day this season when such temperatures were recorded.
IMD issues Yellow alert for Delhi and adjoining areas
Delhi’s scorching weather is expected to get worsen with IMD predicting heave conditions over the national capital. This comes right after parts of Delhi saw temperature soaring up to 46 degrees Celsius. Najafgarh recorded the highest maximum temperature on Sunday at 46.3 degrees Celsius.
The temperature is expected to hit a maximum of 43 degrees Celsius at the weather observatory in Safdarjung, while strong surface winds of 25 to 35 kmph are likely along with partly cloudy skies on Monday, predicted IMD. The maximum temperature is expected to persist at around 43°C on Tuesday as well.
In a press release, IMD said, “Maximum temperatures are very likely to rise by 2-3°C over Northwest India during next 3 days and fall by 3-5°C thereafter. No significant change in maximum temperature very likely over rest parts of the country during next 5 days.”
The weather office added that as per their heat wave criteria, “when actual maximum temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius or more for two consecutive days, then on the second day, a heat wave is declared over the station”.
Rainfall across several regions
IMD also shared that parts of the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands were likely to witness rainfall over the next three days. Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also expected to experience rainfall.
Scattered rainfall along with lightning strikes has been predicted for the Himalayan Region along with Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Isolated pockets in South India are also Kiely to witness scattered rainfall over the next five days, said IMD.
