New Delhi: According to a report by the Swedish think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri), India is stepping up its efforts to improve its nuclear capabilities, with a focus on creating longer-range missiles in particular. According to the research, this strategic shift is being pushed by rising tensions and perceived threats from China and Pakistan, two nearby neighbours. The research claimed that Pakistan and India looked to be building up their nuclear arsenals and creating new nuclear delivery technologies.
Focusing on Longer-Range Missiles to Address Geopolitical Tensions with China
The think tank noted that India appeared to be emphasising longer-range missiles, particularly ones that can reach targets throughout China, in the Sipri Yearbook 2023, which was published on Monday. According to the research, “India appears to be placing growing emphasis on longer-range weapons, including those capable of reaching targets across China,” even though Pakistan continues to be the primary target of its nuclear deterrence. India has been forced to reevaluate its strategic priorities as a result of the quickly rising geopolitical tension in the Indo-Pacific region, which is characterised by China’s belligerent conduct and rapid military modernization.
Enhancing Deterrence with Longer-Range Weapons and Missile Defense Systems
India is concentrating on developing longer-range nuclear weapons to improve its ability to deter China. India is working to upgrade missile technology and infrastructure in order to develop longer-range nuclear weapons. The continuous development of the Agni family of ballistic missiles, including the Agni-V with a range of more than 5,000 km, shows the Defence Ministry’s determination to expanding its striking capabilities. India also wants to preserve its assets and defend against possible threats by investing in cutting-edge missile defence systems, which will strengthen its overall nuclear deterrence. According to the Sipri analysis, China’s nuclear arsenal was “expected to keep growing” and had gone from 350 warheads in January 2022 to 410 in January 2023. According to the report, India now possesses 164 nuclear warheads.
