India Canada Relations: India Negates ‘Secret Memo’ Report on Khalistani Terrorism, Labelled as ‘Fake’

India Canada Relations

India Canada Relations: On Sunday, the government denied a media report that purported the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had instructed Indian embassies in North America to take action against terrorists who support Khalistani ideology, such as Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in a “secret memo.”

MEA’s Strong Rebuke

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi blasted the media outlet for “propagating fake narratives peddled by Pakistani intelligence” and labelled the report “fake” and “completely fabricated” in a statement. He claimed that the report was a component of an ongoing defamation effort directed towards India.

MEA Asserts ‘Fake’ Report

“We strongly assert that such reports are fake and completely fabricated. There is no such memo. This is part of a sustained disinformation campaign against India. The outlet in question is known for propagating fake narratives peddled by Pakistani intelligence. The posts of the authors confirm this linkage. Those who amplify such fake news only do so at the cost of their own credibility,” the MEA statement read.

US-Based Report Reveals MEA’s Instructions on Khalistani Figure Nijjar

Two months before Nijjar was killed in Surrey, Canada, a US-based publication reported that the MEA had instructed embassies in North America to take decisive action against him in an April memo. The purported memo included a list of terrorists from Khalistani who were being looked into by Indian intelligence services. After Nijjar was killed, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that “Indian government agents” were responsible for the murder of the Khalistani terrorist, setting off a diplomatic spat between his country and India in September.

India Challenges Canada’s Accusations

India disputed Canada’s assertions and requested supporting documentation for its accusations from the Trudeau administration. Nijjar led the outlawed Khalistan Tiger Force and was named a terrorist by India in 2020. In Surrey, British Columbia Province, Canada, two unidentified gunmen shot and killed him outside a gurdwara.
