India Canada Relations: S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, stated on Sunday that the recent concerns voiced by the US and Canada regarding India “are not necessarily the same”. Both nations have claimed connections between India and the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and a plot to kill Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
American Concerns Unveiled
“The point was when Americans brought up some issues and the two issues are not necessarily the same. When they brought up that issue, the Americans told us some specific things,” said Jaishankar during an event in Bengaluru. He went on to say that India is a responsible and prudent nation that is always willing to consider suggestions from other nations.
Global Diplomacy Norms
“I think everybody knows that India is a country where we are very responsible, we are very prudent about what we do. The whole issue for us has been that we have always maintained that any country, not just Canada, has a concern and gives us some input or some basis for that concern, we are always open to look at it. This is what countries do,” said Jaishankar. According to the foreign minister, these kinds of “challenges” occasionally occur in international relations.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar Shot and Killed Outside Surrey Gurdwara
“So we very sincerely told the Canadians, saying that it’s up to you, I mean your choice, whether you would like us to pursue it, further look into it or not,” added Jaishankar. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a terrorist from Khalistani, was killed, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed in September that there was a “potential link between agents of the Government of India” and his death. In 2020, India classified Nijjar as a terrorist. On June 18 of this year, he was shot and killed outside of a gurdwara in Surrey.
India’s Strong Rebuttal
India referred to the Canadian accusations as “absurd” and “motivated” and refuted them. A few months later, in November, Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national of 52 years old, was charged by the US Justice Department with participating in a purported murderous scheme against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. The Justice Department also said that Gupta participated in the purported plot in collusion with an employee of an Indian government agency.
