India – Canada: In the midst of rising tensions between India and Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once more voiced his suspicions about India’s supposed role in the assassination of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, citing “credible reasons.” Nonetheless, he remained unable to furnish concrete evidence to support his claims. The Canadian Prime Minister clarified that he is not seeking to provoke India and underscored that he had previously conveyed his concerns about the matter to PM Narendra Modi.
Trudeau reaffirms his stand
Trudeau said, “As I said on Monday, there are credible reasons to believe that agents of the Government of India were involved in the killing of a Canadian on Canadian soil. That is …there is something of utmost foundational importance in a country’s rule of law in a world where international rules-based order matters…we have rigorous and independent judges and robust processes..”
India has dismissed the accusation and raised concerns about “politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence” occurring in Canada. The Indian government stated that Canada has not shared any details concerning the killing of Nijjar.
Furthermore, India has asserted allegations of “Canadian diplomatic intervention” in its domestic matters and has called for a reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats operating within the country. The foreign ministry argued that Canada’s diplomatic representation in India surpasses what India deems necessary and should be scaled down.
Visa services stopped
The government has halted visa services in Canada, citing “security threats” that are impeding their officials from conducting visa-related duties. Foreign Ministry said, “You are aware of the security threats being faced by our High Commissions and Consulates in Canada… this has disrupted their normal functioning.”
The diplomatic dispute escalated on Tuesday as both nations expelled high-ranking diplomats and issued travel advisories. India has advised its citizens residing in Canada and those planning to travel there to exercise “extreme caution” in light of the increasing anti-India activities.
USA in communication with both countries
The United States has confirmed that it is engaged in communication with both India and Canada regarding the issue, emphasising the significance of both countries in its foreign relations. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the US supports the ongoing investigative efforts and the pursuit of accountability for those responsible.
Canada has emerged as a prominent destination for Sikh immigrants, where concerns have arisen about the growth of extremism in recent years. Over the past few months, Canada has witnessed various Khalistani activities, including protests outside the Indian Embassy and the display of threatening posters targeting Indian diplomats.
