India – Canada Row: In contrast to the SGPC, the Glasgow Guru Granth Sahib Gurudwara has extended a direct apology to the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami. This apology comes after an incident on Friday in which Sikh extremists based in London denied his entry into the temple premises.
Glassgow Gurudwara sends letter to High Comissioner
The Glassgow gurdwara committee has conveyed, in a letter addressed to the High Commissioner, its assurance that the three individuals implicated in the unpleasant incident were not affiliated with their regular congregation and were unfamiliar to the Gurudwara community on Albert Road in Glasgow. Furthermore, the committee has extended an invitation to the High Commissioner to revisit the Gurudwara, and they are expected to issue a public statement tomorrow.
Sikh radical is terrorist Hawara supporter
Two of the three individuals who attempted to confront the Indian High Commissioner have been identified as Shamsher Singh and Ranveer Singh, both residing in London. Notably, Ranveer Singh was captured in a photograph at a shooting range while holding a rifle and was also seen wearing a T-shirt advocating for the release of Jagtar Singh Hawara, a member of Babbar Khalsa International, who was implicated in the conspiracy to assassinate Punjab’s 12th Chief Minister, Beant Singh, on August 31, 1995. The assassination was carried out by Dilawar Singh Babbar, who acted as a human bomb, detonating Beant Singh’s bulletproof car at the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. This horrific act resulted in the loss of seventeen lives and injuries to fifteen others.
Sikh Radicals had blocked High Comissioner’s entry
Indian High Commissioner Doraiswami, a senior IFS officer from the 1992 batch, had initially visited the Glasgow Gurudwara in August 2023 upon the committee’s invitation, and this invitation was reaffirmed this month. Despite the uptick in Sikh radical activity, Doraiswami has continued to visit at least four Gurudwaras, where he and his colleagues have been warmly received by the community. Prior to his visit to the Glasgow Gurudwara, High Commissioner Doraiswami also had a meeting with the Indian Muslim Association in Glasgow.
Even though the Scotland police and British intelligence had been notified in advance about High Commissioner Doraiswami’s visit to the Glasgow Gurudwara, the incident came as a shock to everyone as the local community was unable to effectively deal with the troublemakers. Presently, the Scotland police are in the process of gathering statements from all parties involved, including the local Sikh Member of Parliament in the city. It is expected that action will be taken against the extremists involved in the incident in the near future.
