The road, branching out from an extension of Highway G219 in China’s Xinjiang region, disappears into the mountains approximately 50 kilometers north of India’s northernmost point, Indira Col in the Siachen Glacier. Satellite images captured by the European Space Agency and analyzed by India Today’s Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) team reveal that the construction of the road began between June and August last year.

Lt Gen Rakesh Sharma, former commander of the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps responsible for manning Kargil, Siachin Glacier, and Eastern Ladakh, has described the road as “totally illegal” and urged India to register its diplomatic protest with China.
