India has taken the initiative to promote the use of Hindi language in the United Nations (UN). Under this, India has contributed US $ 1 million (about Rs 8.3 crore) to the United Nations (UN).
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj handed over a check to Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Global Communications, for expanding the use of Hindi language in the world organisation.
Ruchira Kamboj said in a tweet, “Investing in linguistic inclusivity. We handed over a check of one million dollars to Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Global Communications, for increasing the use of Hindi in the UN. With the Hindi in the UN (Hindi@UN) project, we are breaking down barriers and increasing public access.
Meanwhile, in another tweet, Kamboj said that this is an initiative towards promoting inclusive dialogue and understanding.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Kamboj said, UN’s efforts to mainstream and strengthen news and multimedia content in the Hindi language have been appreciated in India and in countries where Hindi-speaking populations reside. According to the press release, he further said that the Government of India will continue to promote the use of Hindi language in the United Nations for this purpose. India is happy to partner with the United Nations.
The Hindi@UN project was launched in 2018 in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Public Information. Its purpose is to increase the public reach of the United Nations in the Hindi language and to spread greater awareness of global issues among the millions of Hindi-speaking people around the world.
UN Hindi social media accounts with 50,000 followers on Twitter, 29,000 on Instagram and 15,000 on Facebook with around 1000 posts published every year. The Hindi UN News website continues to be among the top ten internet search engines with 1.3 million annual impressions.
