Jaahnavi Kandula: India has ordered an investigation into the death of Jaahnavi Kandula, an Indian student who was killed in Seattle, Washington, after being struck by a police cruiser while crossing the street. This occurs in the midst of widespread uproar over an alleged bodycam footage in which a police officer can be heard making jokes and laughing about the killing of Kandula.
Urgent Action and International Concerns
The event and the now-viral video of the officer’s response were described as “deeply troubling” by the Indian Consulate General in San Francisco on Wednesday. “We have taken up the matter strongly with local authorities in Seattle & Washington State as well as senior officials in Washington DC for a thorough investigation & action against those involved in this tragic case,” the mission said in a post on platform X (formerly Twitter). “The Consulate & Embassy will continue to closely follow up on this matter with all concerned authorities,” it added.
Controversial Video Exposes Officer’s Laughter Amid Tragic Accident – Shocking Details Emerge
Officer Daniel Auderer can be seen laughing as he talks about the death of 23-year-old Northeastern University graduate Jaahnavi Kandula, who was killed in January after being hit by a patrol car driven by another officer, Kevin Dave, in a video clip released by the Seattle Police Department. This caused controversy. The graduate student’s body was thrown more than 100 feet (30 metres), according to The Seattle Times, which cited a police investigation report.
High-Speed Impact and Officer’s Shocking Remarks Surface in Tragic Incident
The officer operating the car was travelling at 74 mph (119 kmph), according to the report. To determine whether Dave was impaired, Auderer, an officer trained in impairment recognition, was called to the site. At this point, the audio from a call he placed to a coworker was captured by his body camera. The officer inside the police car is heard saying in the video that the victim “had limited value anyway” and that the city should “just write a cheque.” He chuckles about the fatal collision and denies any wrongdoing on the part of the officer or the need for a criminal probe.
