According to IMD statistics released on Wednesday, India had its warmest December in recorded history in 2022, mostly because of above-average temperatures in the country’s east, northeast, and some areas of the centre.
The mean temperature in India was the highest for the month in the previous 122 years, despite several days in north India being severely chilly.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) statistics showed that the mean December temperature for the previous year had increased to 21.49oC, breaking the previous all-time high record of 21.46oC in December 2008.
At 27.32oC, the monthly maximum temperature in India in December 2022 was also the second highest since 1901. The hottest temperature was 27.75oC in December 2016.
Second highest last year
In the last December the average night temperature, too, was the second highest for the month in India’s recorded history at 15.65oC, slightly lower than the highest ever for December in 2008 (15.69oC). The data revealed that in the past 14 years, India experienced its warmest December nights last month.
Rajendra Jenamani, scientist at National Weather Forecasting Centre, IMD, told TOI, “The main reason for such highs was the above-normal temperatures in east and northeast India, and also partly central India, in December 2022. In east and northeast India, the maximum and mean December 2022 temperatures were the highest since 1901.”
