Aircraft Engine Deal: In a significant development, France and India have signed an agreement to manufacture combat aircraft engines in the country. A decision to this effect was taken by France-owned Saffran and India’s Defence Research and Development Organization. A roadmap regarding this project will be prepared by both organizations before the end of 2023.
Defence collaboration was the main feature
This agreement comes on the backdrop of PM Modi‘s two-day official visit to France. It is noteworthy that GE Aerospace will also be manufacturing engines for fighter aircraft in India. India and France have also decided to collaborate in the India Multi-Role Helicopter programme. This project envisages the fitment of Saffran engines in Indian heavy-lift helicopters. Significantly, there was no word on the procurement of 26 Rafale-M naval fighter planes.Many observers had predicted that India would buy these aircraft for its maritime security. Similarly, there was no mention of the setting up of a French nuclear plant in India.
Other highlights
PM Modi spoke about cross-border terrorism during his official visit to Paris. Speaking to the media, he said, “We believe that strong action needs to be taken against cross-border terrorism.” A highlight of PM Modi’s visit to France is the introduction of the Unified Payment Interface in that country. Mr. Modi emphasized that France is a key ally in Make in India and Atma Nirbhar programmes. He said, “Be it submarines or naval aircraft, together we want to fulfil not just ours but also the requirements of other friendly countries.” There are other highlights of Mr. Modi’s visit to France. He was the chief guest on Bastille Day which is an important marker in France’s history. The prime minister was also given France’s highest civilian award. During his visit, Mr. Modi met Leena Nair, CEO of Chanel, and invited her to invest in India.
