India’s tiger population in 2022 is 3,167, PM Modi made the announcement in Mysuru today. The Prime Minister is participating in various programmes in Karnataka to mark 50 years of Project Tiger. In the morning, he visited frontline field staff and Self Help Groups involved in conservation activities. The prime minister also paid a visit to Theppakadu Elephant camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu where he met Bomman and Bellie, the tribal couple whose life is documented in the Oscar-winning documentary The Elephant Whisperers.
PM Modi says India records 6.74% increase in tiger numbers
PM Modi on Sunday said that the number of tigers in India have increased by 6.74 per cent from 2,967 to 3,167 since 2018. “The success of ‘Project Tiger’ is a matter of pride not only for India, but for whole world,” pm mODI SAID. Speaking about re-introduction Cheetahs in India decades after the big-cat’s extinction said, PM Modi said, “Cheetahs had become extinct in India decades ago. We brought this magnificent big cat to India from Namibia and South Africa. This is the first successful trans-continental translocation of the big cat.” He also added that the India has the largest Asiatic Elephant range in the world with nearly 30,000 Elephants.
PM Modi also took to his Instagram handle to share glimpses from his safari ride. “Sharing glimpses of my visit to Bandipur & Mudumalai reserves..Have a look! #Wildlife,” he wrote in the caption.
PM Modi meets Bomman, Bellie
During his visit, PM Modi also met Bommon and Bellie, who served as the inspiration to Guneet Monga and Kartiki Gonsalves’ Oscar-winning film The Elephant Whisperers.
Sharing many photos from his meet, PM Modi wrote, “What a delight to meet the wonderful Bomman and Belli, along with Bommi and Raghu (sic).”

Ahead of his inaugural address, PM Modi launched International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA) and also released a summary report of 5th cycle of Management Effective Evaluation of Tiger Reserves.
Don’t sell Bandipur to Adani: Congress attacks PM Modi
Meanwhile, Congress took to tie at PM Modi as he visited the Bandipur national forest. The state unit of Congress in a sarcastic appeal asked him not to sell the national property to businessman Gautam Adani. It also claimed that the Congress government had launched the Bandipur Tiger conservation project in 1973.
A post in the official Twitter handle of Karnataka Congress read, “Dear Narendra Modi, it was the Congress government which implemented the Bandipur tiger conservation project in 1973, where you are enjoying a safari today. That is the result. Today, the number of tigers has increased significantly. We have a special appeal to you. Please don’t sell Bandipur to Adani.”
