Filmmaker Payal Kapadia won the Grand Prix for her outstanding film All We Imagine As Light at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, marking a great occasion for India. In addition to expressing his sincere congratulations to Payal, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised her creativity and the inspiration she offers to a new generation of filmmakers.

The Prime Minister, Modi, showed his appreciation for Payal’s historic victory on social media platform X, (Formerly Twitter). He said, “India is proud of Payal Kapadia for her historic feat of winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her work ‘All We Imagine as Light’. An alumnus of FTII, her remarkable talent continues to shine on the global stage, giving a glimpse of the rich creativity in India. This prestigious accolade not only honours her exceptional skills but also inspires a new generation of Indian filmmakers.”
Historic Win at Cannes 2024
Just behind the Palme d’Or, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light has taken home the esteemed Grand Prix, the festival’s second-highest honour. Given that Payal is the first Indian director to win the Grand Prix, this accomplishment is very significant. Her film was also the first Indian submission to the main competition at Cannes in thirty years, and the first ever by an Indian woman filmmaker.
All We Imagine As Light Film and Its Reception
An Indo-French production titled All We Imagine As Light portrays the touching tale of Prabha, a nurse portrayed by Kani Kusruti, who gets an unexpected present from her long-estranged husband. Anu, played by Divya Prabha, is her flatmate and younger buddy. She looks for a peaceful place to be with her partner. The two ladies travel to a seaside town together in search of a place where their aspirations can come true. The film received one of the longest standing ovations of the festival this year, lasting eight minutes, following its May 23 debut.

Along with her cast, Payal Kapadia attended the awards ceremony with Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam. Their participation emphasised the spirit of collaboration that went into making the movie, which was up against films from well-known filmmakers like Yorgos Lanthimos, Paul Schrader, Paolo Sorrentino, and Francis Ford Coppola.
