India Maldives Row: The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), the hospitality division of the Tata Group, has revealed plans to build two Taj-branded resorts on the islands of Kadmat and Suheli in Lakshadweep, India’s smallest union territory. This announcement is a significant step towards promoting tourism and the local economy. Reports state that the project demonstrates the group’s dedication to ecotourism and sustainable development.
IHCL’s Grand Vision
“The Greenfield projects are slated to open in 2026, and will be developed by IHCL,” the company said. This occurs at a time when the Maldives and India are at odds, and Lakshadweep is being marketed as a top holiday spot for Indian travellers. PM Modi posted images of the islands and promoted Lakshadweep as a travel destination, which caused the area to suddenly become well-known.
IHCL Leadership Insight
IHCL MD and CEO Puneet Chhatwal stated, “We see significant potential in Lakshadweep, with its pristine beaches and coral reefs set amongst the Arabian Sea,” when announcing the signing of resorts last year. “The two world-class Taj resorts will attract international as well as national travellers,” he added according to Business Today.
Taj Kadmat Unveiled
While the Taj Kadmat will have 110 rooms with 75 beach villas and 35 water villas, the Taj Suheli is expected to have 110 rooms with 60 beach villas and 50 water villas. The Arabian Sea archipelago of Lakshadweep is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, which includes unique beaches, coral reefs, and lagoons. “It is a haven for water sports including scuba diving, windsurfing, snorkelling, surfing, water skiing, and yachting,” the company said.
