India has now summoned Canada condemning activities by “separatist and extremist forces” against Indian diplomatic missions and consulates after the US and UK aroused its wrath over pro-Khalistani groups attacking its missions in both countries.
According to a MEA official statement released on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Canadian High Commissioner on Saturday and expressed India’s “strong concern” about the attacks this past week.
“The Government of India sought an explanation on how such elements were allowed, in the presence of police, to breach the security of our diplomatic Mission and Consulates,” the statement said.
“It is expected that the Canadian Government will take all steps which are required to ensure the safety of our diplomats and security of our diplomatic premises so that they are able to fulfil their normal diplomatic functions,” it added.
Also, India reminded Canadian of its obligations under the Vienna Convention and requested that Canada arrest and bring charges against those “who have already been recognised as being involved in such crimes,” according to the MEA.
There is a large Indian diaspora in Canada, especially from Punjab. The MEA issued a warning for Indian citizens and students studying in Canada in September of last year, citing a “sharp spike in cases of hate crime, sectarian violence, and anti-India activities” there.
Vandalism has occurred frequently recently in Indian embassies in the US and the UK. The Indian flag at the Indian High Commission in London had been ripped down two weeks prior by demonstrators shouting pro-Khalistan slogans.
On Sunday, protestors shouting in support of Khalistan attacked the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. They managed to get past the makeshift security measures and erected two “Khalistani flags” inside the Consulate building.
