India Vs Bharat: In the midst of a controversy over President Droupadi Murmu’s G20 dinner invitations referring to her as “President of Bharat” instead of “President of India,” a top UN official has stated that the UN evaluates requests from nations to change their titles as and when the global organisation receives them.
Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, used Turkey’s name change to Turkiye last year as an example on Wednesday.

“Well, in the case of Turkiye, we responded to a formal request delivered to us by the Government. Obviously, if we get requests like that, we consider them as they come,” he said in responding to a question on name change asked by a reporter.
Tuesday, a dispute broke out in India after President Murmu sent invitations to a G20 dinner, referring to her position as “President of Bharat” rather than the traditional “President of India.” The opposition charged that the Narendra Modi administration intended to drop India and stick with just Bharat as the name of the nation.
PM Modi urged his ministers to stay out of political controversy
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi urged his ministers to stay out of the political controversy over the name of the country, Bharat, emphasising that it had been its previous name.
During his conversation with the Union Council of Ministers, Modi addressed the concerns and outlined the dos and don’ts that should be followed by them during the upcoming G20 summit.
In order to prevent any inconvenience from being caused to visiting dignitaries, he ordered them to remain in the national capital throughout the major exercise and complete any tasks allocated to them.
On September 9 and 10, the G20 Summit will be held in New Delhi under the auspices of India, and various leaders of state from around the world, including US President Joe Biden, will be in attendance.
