IAF: A brief history
The Indian Air Force was formally founded on October 8, 1932, as an allied air force of the British Empire, which gave the prefix Royal to India’s aviation service during World War II. Its first aircraft was created on April 1st, 1933, with 19 Havai Sepoys and six officers trained in the RAF (air soldiers).
The name Royal Indian Air Force was retained and the organisation continued to operate under the Dominion of India after India won its independence from Great Britain in 1947. The prefix Royal was dropped in 1950 when the country changed from a monarchy to a republic.

The purpose of the day is to honour the Indian Air Force and recognise their commitment to a prosperous country.
The IAF has fought four battles with neighbouring Pakistan since 1950. Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus, and Operation Poomalai are some of the IAF’s other significant operations. The IAF’s duty extends beyond combat with hostile troops, as seen by its involvement in UN peacekeeping operations.
