For the first time in the Republic Day-2023 parade, the Garud Commandos of the Indian Air Force will march on the duty path. Squadron Leader PS Jaitavat will lead the Garuda contingent and Squadron Leader Sindhu Reddy will be the Commander of the contingent.
Garud Commando is the special lethal force of the Indian Airforce. This force was created in February 2004. Their main work is air assault, air traffic control, close protection, search and rescue, anti-terrorist operations, direct action, security of airfields.
They do training for 72 weeks
Of all the commando forces in India, they have the longest training. They do training for 72 weeks. Garuda commandos are expert in air and water strike at night. They are given separate training for air attack. At present there are 1780 Garud commandos in this force.
At this time, new training is also being given to the Garud commandos of the Air Force for the elimination of terrorism and direct combat with the enemies on the border. A Garud commando becomes a fully operational commando only after three years of training. The training is so strict that 30 percent of the trainees who take the training leave the training within the first 3 months.

These include the AK 47, the modern AK-103, the Sigsor, the Tavor assault rifle, the modern Negev LMG, and the Galilee sniper, which destroys the enemy up to one kilometer. 150 rounds can be fired at a time from Negev LMG. Along with modern weapons like Tavor assault rifle, Garuda commandos also use night vision, smoke grenade, hand grenade.
After the terrorist attack on the airbase in Jammu and Kashmir in 2001, the Air Force felt the need for a special force. After this, in 2004, the Airforce established the Garuda Commando Force for the security of its air base. Even during the terrorist attack on Pathankot airbase, the first encounter with the terrorists was done by Garud commandos.
Garud commando Gursewak was martyred while fighting the terrorists in that attack. At present, the Garud commandos are fighting terrorists on many fronts in the Kashmir Valley. In the year 2017, Garuda commandos killed 8 to 9 terrorists.
