As India celebrates 75 years of independence, wishes are coming from not just all over the world, but even from outside the world! Indian-American astronaut Raja Chari celebrated the occasion with a photo of the Indian flag at the International Space Station. The astronaut posted the picture on his social media with a caption for the people of India, especially Indians living abroad.
The Indian-American recently returned home after a mission that lasted six months at the ISS. Mr. Chari was one of the four astronauts aboard a Space X spacecraft that safely splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico in May.
“On Indian Independence eve, I’m reminded of the Indian diaspora that I could see from @Space_Station where my immigrant father’s hometown of Hyderabad shines bright. @nasa is just 1 place Indian Americans make a difference every day. Looking forward to @IndianEmbassyUS celebration,” he captioned the tweet.
Raja Chari was chosen to be an astronaut in 2017 while working at the American space agency NASA. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the astronaut grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is married with 3 children.
Chari’s grandfather was a resident of Mahabubnagar in Telangana. He taught Mathematics at Osmania University, Hyderabad. Meanwhile, his father, Sreenivas Chari, studied engineering at the same university and later moved to the US. The astronaut has visited Hyderabad a few times, where his relatives live.
This year, India is celebrating ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, marking 75 years of its Independence.
