Indian Army has taken a step towards modernization by discontinuing colonial practices, as per the directives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The use of horse-driven buggies, pulling out ceremonies, and pipers during dinner nights are among the traditions that will no longer be followed. The order was issued to all units under the Indian Army to cease these practices.
Step towards modernising Indian Army
As per the document, the units or formations will no longer use buggies for ceremonial functions, and the horses employed for such events will now be provided to other formations for training purposes. The Indian Army, in its efforts to modernise and align with the changing times, is reviewing some of its legacy practices.
One such practice that is under scrutiny is the pulling-out ceremony, which involves the commanding officer’s vehicle being pulled by the rest of the officers and troops during their posting or retirement. However, an army official clarified that this practice is not very widespread, especially in cases where officers retire or get posted out from Delhi.
Similarly, the use of pipe bands during dinner nights is limited to only a few infantry units that have them. The army is considering doing away with these practices and has issued instructions to cease the use of buggies and pipers during functions and ceremonies. This move is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for aligning with national sentiment and following the five vows.
Indian Army to change names for other establishments
Army is also evaluating the names of buildings, roads, parks, and institutes that bear English names and may be replaced with more culturally appropriate ones. The Army has already taken action in several cases to rename such establishments, including Auchinleck and Kitchener House.
