An Indian Army Captain from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles lost his life on Wednesday during a fervent search and rescue operation in the Assar area of the Doda district, Jammu & Kashmir. According to defence authorities, the operation is still in progress with the goal of removing foreign terrorists who are hiding in the thick belt of forests known as Shivgarh-Assar.

Operation Assar

The encounter erupted in the early hours of Wednesday when a joint team of security forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) to track down a group of heavily armed militants. As the forces advanced into the forest, a heavy exchange of gunfire ensued, tragically resulting in the death of the courageous Army Captain.

Recovery of Weapons Amidst the Intense Gunbattle

During the operation, security forces managed to recover four blood-stained rucksacks and M-4 carbines, indicating the ferocity of the clash. The terrorists, who had infiltrated Doda from the neighboring Udhampur district, were found to have crossed over from a forested area near Patnitop after a brief skirmish with security forces.

The Encounter

The militants and security personnel first came into touch in the Udhampur district on Tuesday at approximately six o’clock in the evening. A violent confrontation broke out in less than thirty minutes, and there were firefights all night long. Security personnel kept a tight perimeter around the region in spite of the difficult terrain and darkness, and they resumed their search as soon as daylight appeared.

Renewed Gunfire at Daybreak

Wednesday dawned a new phase in the operation, with security forces engaging the insurgents in a fresh wave of gunfire at around 7:30 AM. With the goal of destroying the threat these foreign terrorists pose, the forces are resolute in their combat.
